It’s no secret that we come from a seemingly conservative society but it is also quite secretive. I have been thinking a lot about how Nigerian women deal with pain, shame, grief, depression and everything else that we speak about in hush tones. For some reason the poem ‘The Darkness’ was born out of those meandering moments. I am working on a collection of poems that chronicle women’s stories across different generations. I am interested in how they and we navigate our way through the spaces we inhabit and what the spaces do to us and them. I am hoping that those poems will become the bones for a follow up poetry album. In the meantime enjoy this one.
