Qudus Onikeku is always a fascinating person to converse with. He often claims he isn’t an activist but following him on social media tells a completely different story. Qudus is certainly one of Nigeria’s great dance exports but what i particularly love about his work is how he is constantly seeking to contextualise dance not just as an art form but also in cultural practice. In this episode of Culture Diaries we talk about solitude, governance and the arts as well as tapping into tradition in contemporary dance. He also tells me why immersion is more important than understanding and why divergent thinking is necessary. Happy viewing.
