In december last year, i worked on a radio documentary titled Lonely In Lagos for the BBC World Service produced by Just Productions in the UK. I got to work with producer Jo Wheeler on this project who i had worked with almost ten years ago as an intern at a production company called ‘Above the title’ productions.
Lonely in Lagos explores what it means to be lonely in a big city. In the program i travel the city meeting people who are lonely and isolated for different reasons.
I met a young gay man who opens up about his feelings of isolation in the light of strict laws on homosexuality, and a group of displaced women who are coming together to combat loneliness in poverty.
I also listened to moving stories about the impact of depression and grief on loneliness, and visited a cycling club and an elderly community centre helping people feel less lonely.
